The Amusing Essay That Got Me Into College
-Please describe a time when you found the courage to step outside of your somekeyword to do something unexpected and completely unlike you. Why did you take this risk What have you learned from the experience-

I had a lot of trouble coming up with an experience to write about that matched the requirements of this topic, but after several hours of brainstorming I finally came up with a perfect and humorous example: The time I was pressured into somekeyword in front of my class. The following is the exact essay I included in my application. I was accepted early decision and will be attending somekeyword this August. The Essay

One instance where I stepped out of my comfort zone happened when my Expository Writing teacher asked me to perform a dance in front of my class. I am usually not shy about performing in front of others, in fact, I enjoy it. However, dancing in public is my Achilles' heel.

-Can you dance- inquired my classmate John one afternoon in English class. I smirked confidently, conveying with my smile: -Did you really just challenge my dancing abilities- I removed my smile and glared at him, whispering: -I am a dancing phenomenon.- My teacher overheard, smiled an evil grin and announced to the class that I must dance in front of everyone in order to prove my supposed dancing talent. Immediately I sank in my chair like the Titanic after hitting the iceberg. Luckily, I managed to buy a few days of time to prepare, saving me from performing on that frightful day. The decided date of the dance, January 26th, loomed in the gloomy horizon like a colossal rain cloud.

The day before the debacle, I knew I needed to think of something. My teacher had already given me several chances to wimp out whenever a challenge gets thrown my way, I have to follow through. I thought to myself: -I need a song that my classmates know, something that will make them laugh with me, rather than at me.- On Google, I searched for a song to accompany my moves. Unfortunately, -song to dance to- returned 145 million results, after which I went into panic mode. I thought about skipping school; however, I did not want to let my classmates and my delightful yet wicked teacher down.

Suddenly, my brain flashed back four years earlier to my bar mitzvah. I remembered dancing to the song -Apache- by Sugar Hill Gang. Brain Blast! Since I found no instructional videos online, I realized I needed to compose my own dance. Sadly, my limbs refused to obey whatever command I gave them, because every time I tried to practice a move, my mind said: -Wow Bryan, look at you-dancing in the basement by yourself-pretty sweet.- I forced myself not to think of the awkward factor and put together a decent performance. I finally finished and let a bowl of Oreo ice cream relieve my irritating stress. The next day, the real challenge began.

School on Monday went by in slow motion. My brain only focused on the steps to my dance. My anxiety jumped to the next level as the day went on. Finally, the bell rang for English. Time to shine. I walked into class with a sense of poise; however, this sense of composure soon deteriorated after several classmates told me they hoped I make a complete fool of myself. I slowly placed my Apache CD in the disk drive of the computer. I looked up at the bare white ceiling and said: -God-please help me. goal setting - Twenty two faces of my classmates stared. -Just get this over with Bryan- I told myself. Once the music started, something strange happened. I forgot all about my fear and let the music guide me. The laughter and smiles from my classmates made me work harder, and I entered a type of dance zone I never knew existed. -Oh my god! - I thought to myself. -This isn't actually terrible! - My comical yet impressive dance ended to magnanimous applause. I had finally refuted the taunting claims of the classmates who wished me to fail.

This experience strengthened my mettle and redefined the way I look at myself. I now know that my determination for success triumphs my fear of failure. I truly believed that this dance held the potential to ruin my reputation; however, my will to persevere erased this fright. goal setting I took this risk because I refused to let myself and my classmates down. This dance not only helped my morale but it also helped prove my status as a -dancing machine. - My accomplishment with this dance has shown me that success only comes if one steps up to take a risk. Because of this defining experience, dancing in public has become one of my strengths. I now refuse to let my comfort zone hold me back from achieving greatness.

Creating Great Days Your Kids Remember
I have been making a conscious effort to simplify my life. Less shopping, more time at home reading and writing, and learning to live large without spending a fortune. I am convinced that contentment is a heart issue, and I am choosing to practice spontaneity. Recently, I attended one of the best parties I have been to in quite some time. No invitations were sent out, they originated in the heart of one person who needed to play, namely me. My granddaughter and I, after a "sleepover", were headed to meet mom for a swimming lesson. We made an on the way getaway to a beautiful park, Majestic View, We were the first to arrive, and we became the hostesses by default, welcoming everyone that joined us warmly. Although it wasn't planned, it shortly became a special occasion.

Within ten minutes of our arrival, other children showed up, in a half hour there were twenty-something with their thirty-something mothers. Let the good times roll! They played, they ran, swang, slid, crawled, climbed, and hung. There was a flow to it all, that flooded my heart with memories of days past. While talking to one of the moms, I found tears emerging in my eyes. I had forgotten how fun parties really were, and how uncomplicated life could be when we truly engage outside of our comfort zone.

At a playground, with children, and their mothers, sisters and brothers, I made another discovery. People really do want to care about each other. We have so much to learn. Kids know how to make friends, they see chances everyday, everywhere. Children can be carefree and don't need the latest technology to have fun. When they fall down, with a little encouragement, they get back up to play. They help each other get up to the higher places that they can't reach on their own, and they ask for help when they can't figure it out comfortzone. When one starts crying, all attention goes towards the one that is having a problem. Sometimes the crying spreads like an epidemic when one gets started, but do you think they worry about who might see them That's why they are healthy, they let frustration out and move on to have more fun.

Kids don't just find solutions, they invent them, with attention, and cameraderie, and sometimes homemade chocolate chip cookies. Kids just know who has the goods, whether it's Mom or Dad, or Gramma or Grampa, or a friend's mom, and they'll ask for you if you are too shy. Most kids love to share, adults assume they don't and remind them they must. They don't expect anything back for the gifts, and they laugh so easily, even when they are embarassed goal setting. Kids also know when they are being ignored, so watch them play--they won't be this small for long. I observed a 2 year old who was inseparable from her play cell phone, it seemed to be the only thing that gave her comfort. Hmmmm interesting isn't it; her mother was doing the same. At any rate, at the end of my party at the park, I left happy with my heart full, and I hadn't even eaten anything. Everything I observed though, gave me much food for thought. I smiled at the possiblities.

I think we don't always realize what true joy is until we are set out to please others in a healthy way. I found it in the most interesting place on a beautiful fall afternoon, and it didn't cost anything but my time, which was well spent and a simple gift that as my husband pointed out later, "builds memories that last comfortzone. I was searching for a Nixon-era quote that goes something like this: "I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant!"

What I found appears to be a more recent version - I can't find the original anywhere - but I did find some food for thought about clear communication:

We cannot learn from one another until we stop shouting at one another - until we speak quietly enough so that our words can be heard as well as our voices. Richard Nixon

Inspirational Speaker Pete Goss MBE Chases his Dream

Keynote, motivational and inspirational speaker Pete Goss was awarded the British MBE and French Legion D'Honneur for an incredible rescue of a fellow sailor at considerable cost to himself. As an ordinary man who does extraordinary things he is relatable and inspirational and about to embark on another challenging expedition

The only way to fully appreciate Pete Goss is to meet him. You can hear and read about his unusual and inspiring journey through life and you might imagine a super human being, but the most amazing thing about Pete is how ordinary and truly humble he is - an ordinary human being doing extraordinary things and taking extraordinary leaps and bounds when faced with very difficult and challenging circumstances.

In terms of highlights I would draw your attention to a dream that Pete had for ten long years - one of the dreams that many of us may share. There often comes a point in life when we begin to accept that certain dreams will not come to fruition - especially if they involve marrying Brad Pitt or Sharon Stone - but Pete held onto that small window of opportunity and after those ten years decided it was now or never. His dream was to sail in the world's greatest and toughest yacht race, the Vendee Globe non-stop, single-handed Round the World Race' and he knew that it would take a frightening level of skill and funding. He decided to sell his house - as a result of which he was burdened with heavy debts - and steadily took the steps one day at a time to embarking on the race. He was also completely unaware of what was to come - that the most memorable experience would not be the race itself but a shocking accident that unfolded in the middle of the ocean when he was alone and stretched far beyond his comfort zone. Amid winds of 80mph Pete received the distress call that another sailor was in severe danger and facing imminent death. Pete turned his boat round, lost his place in the race completely, and sailed for two days through the battling ocean to rescue the sailor, Raphael Dinelli. Pete was awarded France's highest award, the Legion D'Honneur, by President Chirac and received anMBE from Her Majesty the Queen.

This is just one part of a journey which involved Pete having to operate on himself without anaesthetic and just a few basic instructions to repair ruptured muscles around his elbow. Pete discusses his own dreams and also the level of teamwork that helped him to succeed in what he set out to do. comfortzone Now approaching the age of 49 he has just embarked on another race - the Route du Rhum - with the aim of supporting the campaign against plastic pollution in the ocean and looking at using all-recyclable non-plastic packaging. He still has thoughts of completing another Vendee at some point but it may take some time, "I need to give it some thought, because the Vendee is two races, the first to the start line, the second to the finish. Self-esteem Activities

Hurdles are same for everyone. However, some overcome them and others don't. Besides the skill, what decides whether one is a loser or a winner is his somekeyword. High self-esteem provides one the somekeyword to give his best, however difficult the task may be. Because what a person with high self-esteem sees is his strengths rather than his flaws. Causes of low esteem may be many, however the good news is that self-esteem can be built, not only for kids but also for adults. Here are some self-esteem activities that will help one see one's strengths and boost faith in one's capabilities.

    Focus on Positive Attributes
The first step towards building self-esteem is to view oneself in positive light. We lack self-esteem because we either fail to realize our positive traits or have lost sight of them. The first self-esteem activity here is to list down at least five talents or positive traits of yours. Write the talents or traits on a colored sheet of paper and paste it on your cupboard. Write them in large upper case letters so that they are visible even from a distance. You could let this list be stuck right across on your cupboard so that you can see it often or you could take it a step further by converting it to some fun self-esteem activity. To do that, make seven boxes across every trait, each box corresponding to a day of the week. Put a star in the box for the day when you score on a particular trait. To begin with, let the positive points be character traits like honesty, hard-working or truthfulness as the chances of enacting these positive points is greater than specific talents like singing or dancing.

    Set Goals
Set weekly or monthly goals. Let them be realistic ones. Set relatively easier tasks to achieve. However, set the target a little outside your comfort zone. Reward yourself when you achieve the goal. You could also provide yourself that daily spurt of joy by circling the days in the calendar when your goal is achieved.

    Pick Some Activity
Anything, from planting a tree to making puppets, it could be anything that would give a sense of achievement. The idea behind this self-esteem activity is to allow oneself the sense of accomplishment. Another good option along the same lines is to pick up a hobby. Since one has a natural flair for a hobby, the result would naturally be good. Also the whole experience of indulging in the hobby would ease out the feeling of low self-esteem.

    Bring in Positivity in Life
Another way of instilling somekeyword in oneself is to stick positive and encouraging slogans in one's room. This could also include posters and pictures that denote some form of achievement or success stop procrastinating. Most of our doubts about our efficiency is in the mind, more specifically in the subconscious mind. Once we feed optimism in our subconscious mind, we would have no option but to feel positive about ourselves.

    Use Positive Self Affirmations
Tell yourself the following or better still make a list of the following and put it up in the wall in front of your study desk:
I love myself. I WILL succeed. I am an achiever. I am smart. I choose happiness comfortzone. I WILL be happy. Don't just read these lines. Take some time and repeat these as if you are instructing yourself. These somekeyword are known to have brought results and build a type of somekeyword that find roots deep within in one's psyche.

Activity 1: Divide the group into smaller groups of two. Blindfold one member of each group and instruct the other member to guide the blindfolded one through a maze of 'no access zone' (say a 'minefield') created within a small area outdoors. Being able to guide another person when he has let his trust rest completely on you can be a good self-esteem booster. This is one of the good self-esteem activities for adults.

Activity 2: This can be done only after the members in the group have come to know each other well. Seat all the members in a circle. Play some music. Pass a ball around the circle. Stop the music. The person who holds the ball when the music was stopped has to say something nice that he/she observed in the person sitting on either side.

Activity 3: Make all the group members stand beside one another, arm in arm. Let their legs be in touch with the legs of the members on either side. Now ask the group to walk forward with their legs in touch with each other's. Give them certain distance to cover in a specific time. This activity could be performed with kids as well.

Laying a solid foundation for self-esteem is very important for kids. However, ways of building somekeyword are not very difficult. As a parent, one does not need special somekeyword. Involving them in household chores, seeking their help while shopping for grocery, asking them to babysit their younger siblings are some self-esteem activities that parents can use for their kids. The key is to appreciate a child's accomplishment more than seeking professional help for somekeyword. Other things that parents should keep in mind if they want to boost their child's self-esteem is that they should never criticize their children, more so not in public. Parents should also refrain from making comparisons between siblings. Give your child responsibility and encourage him to complete it. Guide him when he comes across a hurdle and hold him when he falters. All this is what comprises good self-esteem activities for kids as it depends on the parent whom a child trusts the most. Read more on somekeyword.

Although there are a number of self-esteem activities, it is important to realize that the best endeavor towards boosting one's self-esteem activity is to build trust in oneself. Stop brooding over what you don't have and see your strengths. After all, no one is perfect.
